Hiding
Just like people, kitties often withdraw when they don’t feel well. Fluffy may occasionally nap under the bed or in a closet. This isn’t necessarily a concern in and of itself. However, your furball should come out when she gets hungry or wants attention. If your feline pal seems withdrawn, and doesn’t want to leave her chosen spot, she could be ill.
Unkempt Fur
Healthy cats take their beauty regimes quite seriously. If Fluffy is sick, she may not feel up to her usual routine. Her fur will quickly show the neglect, and start looking matted or greasy.
Unusual Behavior
Uncharacteristic behavior, such as hissing and scratching from a cat that is normally sweet and cuddly, can be a red flag. (Note: by unusual behavior, we mean behavior that is out of the ordinary for your pet. If our feline patients came in every time they did something odd, our waiting room would be overflowing with kitties every day!)
Uncharacteristic Vocalizations
Sudden changes in your cat’s vocalizations can also be indicative of sickness. For instance, a quiet kitty that suddenly starts yowling could be sick.
Tummy/Litterbox Trouble
Vomiting and diarrhea can also be signs of medical issues in kitties. Changes in the amount, color, smell, or texture of Fluffy’s waste can also be signs of trouble. Difficulty urinating is also symptomatic of illness.
Respiratory Issues
Healthy cats should breathe smoothly and quietly through their noses. Coughing, wheezing, and gasping are all indications that something isn’t right.
Lethargy
We know, Fluffy is rather lethargic by nature, and will spend a rather exorbitant amount of time just lounging around. However, if your furry pal just seems limp and listless, she may be ill.
